Widowed pilot jumps out of plane for charity!
Airline pilot Tony Strugnell from Glossop has set himself a dizzying challenge to raise money for famous cancer centre, The Christie.
Over the weekend of Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June, Tony will be attempting as many parachute jumps as possible over a 12 hour period.
Tony, a pilot for Cathay Pacific, has organised the event to help raise funds for The Christie in memory of his wife Wynne who was treated for neuro-endocrine cancer, but sadly died in October 2007.
Tony said: “When Wynne was being treated at The Christie, two doctors in particular, Dr Juan Valle and Dr Krebbs, were just fantastic at helping both of us cope with all the difficulties along the way. I’m doing this as a ‘thank you’ and I’m hoping to raise as much money as possible for The Christie.”
The event is being held at Black Knights Parachute Centre in Cockerham (www.bkpc.co.uk) and everyone is welcome to come and lend their support.
Throughout the weekend, there will be competitions to take part in, such as guessing the number of jumps, as well as a ‘spot landing’ prize for anyone who guesses Tony’s exact landing spot. From 8pm on the Saturday there will be a barbeque, and on the Sunday, eight people will be doing sponsored tandem jumps to add to Tony’s fundraising total.
As to how many parachute jumps he will achieve Tony said:
“The aircraft can get to 14,000 feet and back in 12 minutes so if the weather’s on our side I should be on for a good total!”
