Paul Keegan interview
| Paul Keegan – Landlord of…
Moon and Sixpence (Interview by Michael Murphy) |
| Michael: Hi Paul, so first off how are you? |
Paul: Good thanks, cant complain.
| Michael: So, starting off why did you move to Glossop? |
| Paul: Glossop is a great place to live, people are friendly, generally good natured and there is a real sense of community in the area. |
| Michael: When do you consider someone a regular? |
| Paul: We see some customers, we see them daily and this would be most peoples definition of a “regular”. We see other people once or twice a year but they are still very much regulars to us. |
| Michael: Whats your favourite memory from the Moon and Six? |
| Paul: We’ve got a huge list of brilliant memories from the last 3 years with the pub. New Years Eve (or Hogmanay as its correctly termed!) always produces some belters. I walked in from the front door after 6 hours collecting tickets and was confronted with some of our more enthusiastic customers crowd surfing from the stage to the back door!. |
| Michael: And what do you do on your day off ? |
| Paul: We close Mondays and take this as our only day off. Some weeks we get out and about and other times we (Julie Gordon) use Mondays to do pub stuff. Having a pub is a bit like having a small child. It needs constant attention and although we have some real A-Team guys to look after it theres no subsitute for doing it yourself. |
| Michael: Do you think extended opening hours have ruined a traditional “lock in”? |
| Paul: Most pubs in Glossop (ours included) applied for 1 more hour when the 2003 licensing act came into effect in November 2005. I think this was in change with peoples changing lifestyles as people do tend to come out later these days but i cant possibly comment on after-time drinking haha! |
| Michael: How has the smoking ban affected the Moon and Six? |
| Paul: Good and bad: English weather isnt always conducive to being outside so this being forced on us what a bad idea. Although the pub does have cleaner air and the smokers are more sociable with their own area. This also created more room inside when then pub is busy. |
| Michael: Are you going to be putting your name down for the U-18s pub night? |
| Paul: There is a possibility that we may in the near future, getting involved with the Under 18′s nights that run in town. So far it has only just been mentioned but we would be more than happy to get involved. Previous nights have been a massive success and we’d love to help out. |
| Michael: Now the ultimate pub question; Cheese and Onion or Salt and Vinegar? |
| Paul: Cheese and onion every time. |
| Michael: Do you have any new plans for 2009? |
| Paul: We’ve got some big plans for the back end of this year going into next. Sunday afternoons are about to get a rude awakening (cant say too much at the moment). Were booking now for our annual drinkathon which is 5 Days in May and that looks to be massive next year. The Rook and the Ravens lads are bringing their hugely successful stagefright night to 5 Days in May next year. We’ve got quite a lot in the pipeline for next year once we’ve finished this year off with a massive party of course! |
| Michael: Sounds great. Thanks for the interview! |
| Paul: Thanks Mike. |
