Michael Murphy interview

Michael Murphy – Executive of…

One Thought Professional Graphic Design (Interview by Jessica McKeegan)

Jessica: Hi Michael, could you provide a bit of background about yourself?

Michael: Well im originally from Wales (wouldnt guess it listening to me), im 22 years old and moved to Glossop when i was 18 for career purposes in Manchester and im the eldest of 4 children.
Jessica: So what is thisisglossop.co.uk all about?

Michael: Graphic and web design is what ive been doing as a hobby for 4 years. Full time i work for a software company providing their web design and IT support and One Thought Design and this is glossop i built in my spare time. I thought Glossop needed a website of its own. I wanted to give readers editorial control, a local website written by local people for the local people.
Jessica: What do you enjoy most graphic or web designing?

Michael: To be honest i do prefer graphics, i love making logos. Thats how i first got into design. Im not the most talented person by far but i can pull off the odd good job or two.
Jessica: So whats coming up in the next 6 – 12 months?

Michael: Theres a few things at the moment, i dont want to give too much away but ive just started designing my own range of clothes and will want to set up an online shop in the future. Ive never really worked with commerce before so it should be a good challenge. Youll be sure to hear about it when its online.
Jessica: Is there much of a market for your industry in Glossop?

Michael: Glossop is a small town as it is, this can be good and bad. On one hand you may have several people competing for the same clients as yourself but Glossop has also stayed fairly traditional with its family owned businesses who dont get big companies to do their marketing. To me it seems they still want that personal touch with their business which there isnt much of nowadays. Sometimes its just a case of handing a business card to someone you met in your local pub the night before and youve potentially got a new client.
Jessica: So you drink locally then?

Michael: I do indeed, i met alot of my close friends in my local. Im a big fan of the Moon & Sixpence pub. I only live across the road from it, even my cat goes in there! Im not as big a drinker as i used to be (im sure my friends could tell you some stories) but i enjoy a good pint as much as everyone else. Im quite traditional whereas i dont really like clubs, im much more of a pubber. I can talk for England and anyone that knows me will tell you the same, especially after a few lagers down me. Or maybe thats just my way of making up the fact for i cant dance haha.
Jessica: Do you intend to stay in Glossop for a while?

Michael: Fortunately yes, im liking Glossop at the moment. Its a great place to live, i have fantastic friends and a brilliant girlfriend there who looks after me haha. Ive seriously considered moving away a few times before but never have. At the moment im looking into buying somwhere bigger that has a garden so i can get a dog to go with it haha.
Jessica: Finally any words of advise for anyone wanting to get into designing?

Michael: You buy success with failure. If you learn from your mistakes, whoever makes the most mistakes knows the most.
