The New Lamp, Hadfield

Once a brothel, this reputedly haunted pub is now a popular drinking place for visitors and locals. Staff at the Lamp in Hadfield reported in the Glossop Chronicle (11 February 1999) that the pub is haunted by a male ghost.

No-one seems entirely sure just who the mystery spirit is supposed to be, although suggestions were put forward that it could be the ghost of a navvy working nearby on the construction of the Woodhead Tunnel. Perhaps someone should tell him that the work has long since been completed, in fact the tunnel has been closed for some considerable time!

Of course, the fact that the pub used to be a bawdy house is intriguing…and it makes me wonder if he at least died happy!
