Va Bene by Sean

A great restaurant depends on three key factors, the food, the place and the people, and not necessarily in that order. Lancashire born David Artingstall has the combination just right at Va bene, and his Italian restaurant opposite the Railway Station in Glossop, scores highly on all three. I dined with friends last week, and can only say I was delighted with the whole package, but let's get down to the food. I began with an old favourite, pancetta and scallops, 'Capesanti con Pancetta' at £6.75, a combination that has my taste buds leaping a week later. Fresh shellfish sixty miles from the nearest coastline used to be a problem, but not anymore, and mine were sweet and succulent. With Peroni Italian Lager on tap, it seemed wise to order another as we waited for the main, and besides we needed to let the house-red breath a little. When my 'Costelette Gigantica' arrived, (a very large plate of pork and beef ribs), I was tempted to give the hearty plateful a round of applause.
David, who always listens to his patrons thoughts, is happy to try new things, such as themed nights, including A Sicilian Night, opening a wine bar, and new menu items, is also prepared to put his money where his mouth is and he told www.thisisglossop.co.uk " We've just opened the wine bar downstairs so people can try it out by maybe printing a voucher and getting a free glass of wine for 2. Again if someone prints out the review and dines with us, if they spend £20 or more on the meal itself (excluding drinks) then we'll give them a bottle of house wine. Both offers valid until end October."

The Queens by Jason Hicks
Wednesday, 30 July 08 @ 10:56:22 BST

The Queens looks a nice pub from the outside but what a shock when you go inside. The clientelle seem to be rather aged which is ok but this leaves the atmosphere dreary. The young female staff seem to keep the old locals happy although you do tend to wonder how long is spent flirting for tips or if the staff are actually old enough to be serving alcohol. On the plus side the food was lovely and was at a reasonable price too. On the whole the pub is ok to drop in fo a quick half or a curry with the lads but not the kind of place you would take your girlfriend. Too many distractions if you know what i mean.
